- 13/3/10:
back from shanghai, I had a first look at the visual design portfolios,
and I am pleased with the quality and great variety
of the work.
The logos contribute to my understanding of the CTSG, that is how to proceed with it, and the signs illustrate many interesting ideas.
Both the storyboard/photo-sequence and collage are used to express
often personal situations and convictions, sometimes leading to
an almost game-like reading of the message(s).
For more specific comments, look at your individual status (...) files.
Looking at the work thus far I have high expectations of the final assignment(s), and I look forward to the presenation(s) wednesday march 17.
In the mean time, don't forget to work on the essay, and prepare
yourself for the peer-review that will be issued after the presentation(s) of wednesday.
- overall portfolio:
nice, although a bit dominated by blogspot style,
elements a bit hidden, eg. logo in februari.
- basic exercises:
- logo: nice, with political interpretation
- sign: with creative guidelines, colorful
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: interesting, but make availbe as .pdf or phote sequence (not .doc!)
- collage: samples ok, but make the total collage available
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks: nice work, but it needs some finalization
- overall portfolio: ok, clear, basic but effective style
- basic exercises:
- logo: should be about CTSG, but otherwise well done, personal is promising but needs some work
- sign: nice idea (althouh as a smoker I disagree), good experimentation
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: about a cat, poetic
- collage: intriguing abstraction/distortion + visual quotes, combined into interesting statement
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: good overall style, though you may (for the moment suppress technical details)
- basic exercises:
- logo: personal one (band) stronger than CTSG
- sign: highly appropriate, and clear
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: ambitious but well done
- collage: good statement, and appropriate style
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: I would prefer a portfolio which also gives an over, not only a sequence of the work.
And click may be replace by next, which then should be complemented by prev!
- basic exercises:
- logo: strong, I like it
- sign: nice thought, although ..., the visuals of it could probaby be improved, I think
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: well done, although it seems unfinished, one way or another
- collage: an explanation would be helpful, in terms of elements: a bit much
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: clear, good style, but I could do without the announcement on Home, an overview or personal statment would be welcome (and less schoolish)
- basic exercises:
- logo: nice effectivem although a bit too figurative, to my mind
- sign: good idea, but on the one hand the topic could be represented more indirectly (slow sign), and I think the car is visually unsatisfactory
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: good atmosphere, but some supporting text, and possibly explanation would be helpful
- collage: very nice, the strongest of the portfolio, I think
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: nice personal style, clear
- basic exercises:
- logo: too symmetrical, IMHO, but good underlying thought(s0
- sign: in retrospect, it almost looks as if the dog brings a newspaper, which would imply be nice to nice dogs, for the rest good visual style
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: (my preference), nice material and (graph) presentation, with relevant story
- collage:
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: on first impression, strong
- basic exercises:
- logo: last one strong idea, but composition could be enhanced, I find the letters to isolated
- sign: totally agree
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: excellent idea, ambitious, but realization satisfactory
- collage: excellent topic, and quote -- without music life would be a mistake, visually you could go a step further
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: clean, basic style, but omit welcome statement.
Additional explanation(s)/justification(s) would, however, be welcome!
- basic exercises:
- logo: made of bricks, OK, but perhaps not expressive wrt meaning
- sign: blockhead TV, good idea, although difficult to transmit
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: having just been in egmond: appropriate. good topic
- collage: topic clear, could find better articulation though
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: very impressive at first sight, but I think it needs additional justifications, and show the process (too)
- basic exercises:
- logo: basic, good
- sign: as a motorcyclist I find this totally justified, but the imperative behind it should also be clear to non-motorcyclists. Is it?
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: nice, evaocative, but could well be extended, with a little bit more explicit story
- collage: not online (yet)
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: excellent consistent setup, with good overall vieuw
- basic exercises:
- logo: very good idea, the pixelation could be continued in letter, that is CTSG might have more distortion
- sign: good thought, although a permissive sign (eg. blue bycicle sign) might be more effective than a prohibitive *red* sign.
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: very well done, I like the progressionof development(s)
- collage: also very clear, well-articulated, although some of the elements are slightly too dominant, I think
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: in construction (now folder)
- basic exercises:
- logo: nice, promising
- sign: also, not bad
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence:
- collage:
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
13/3/10: complete the portfolio, asap!
- overall portfolio: well done, a bit flashy, but nice,
however some explanation/justification(s) would improve the work
- basic exercises:
- logo: very good, I like the style and color scheme
- sign: well-motivated, and nicely done (these with good explanation!)
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: intriguing atmosphere!
- collage: evocative, but seems to be still open for an articulation of statement
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: very good first impression, with nice personal logo (that I originally mistook for the CTSG logo).
Showing the process, or simulating a process, would improve the portfolio.
- basic exercises:
- logo: very good, also the CTSG logo
- sign: interesting thought/equation, visually conventional though
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: excellent, intriguing
- collage: does not load
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: very well done, a good first impression, and navigation is clear. (the zip under portfolio is confusing, though)
- basic exercises:
- logo: I prefer the first one, which is graphically more clear, and also since the pun is quite appropriate!
- sign: nice, and instead of the green you might consider blue, which somehow suggests more of an imperative.
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: adequate, and well-done
- collage: (missed that at first, mistook it for a sign), nice thought, still have some doubts, but no clear advice at this stage ...
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: good, clear structure, nice background, clear comments
- basic exercises:
- logo: i like them both, and incidentally the dots remind me of pills, which afterall are another source of superpower
- sign: nice idea, although the nothing could be more inviting,
apart from the color and lack of bar
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: nice viaual joke with house,
although (likely) knowledge about its intention is necessary to appreciate that
- collage: relevant thought(s), heavy with meaning, but perhaps too direct
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: contains good work, but (finish construction and)
add structure and explanations
- basic exercises:
- logo: nice, a bit dependent on (game) context
- sign: well done, visually clear and well-motivated
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: good, although rather safe story
- collage: nice way to collect this variety of material, well-done
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: aquarium of the mind, nice and well structured
- basic exercises:
- logo:
- sign: nice subtle solution, a bit cheeky also
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: well done, I like it, the story I mean, not necessarily the pasta
- collage: not bad, good atmosphere and nice message, slightly to symmetrical around the horizontal axis though, in my opinion
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: lloks very good, although you may supress the capital in portfolio. All in all,well structured, and interesting
- basic exercises:
- logo: good start, however more as element in a game than as brand
- sign: well, I can only agree, well executed
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: good underlying motivation, but I think the coherence of the images could be better, supporting the same idea
of shift in perspective
- collage: excellent, a wealth of ideas, well-motivated,
reads like a game, so to speak
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
18/3/10: good work, I am glad you took the course.
- overall portfolio: promising, well-organised, good taste, but you might take (perhaps) a somewhat more risky approach
- basic exercises:
- logo: adequate, nice visual sketchy) style
- sign: good, although for both red and green visual elements could be more integrated
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: the room is clean, appropriate subject, well-done
- collage: good way to collect visual information, all in all a good approach
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
remarks:
- overall portfolio: well-done, promising, but still a bit conventional in structure
- basic exercises:
- logo: ladder, in perspective would very likely be stronger,
nice and simple though
- sign: a good example of a slow sign, however, try it against a proper background, possibly different color schemes (sometimes: less is more)
- (storyboard)/bw phote sequence: the way to work, but think about the arrow
- collage: topic clear, and structure OK, I like the broken background, but somehow the elements could be better integrated
- final application:
- presentation(s)/essay(s):
- observation(s):
